Why Dance?
Dancing brings people together. It lifts your spirits. It
keeps you healthy. It has many benefits.
Benefit #1: Dancing Makes You Feel Good
When you hear good music, it moves you. Doesn't it? When you
hear a song with a good beat, you want to move. You want to dance.
It's natural. Whether you're dancing when nobody's watching or
you're dancing in public, it revitalizes you. On a recent TV show,
Ellen Degeneres commented that you cannot dance and be in a bad mood at
the same time. Dancing just lifts your spirits. It energizes
your life and helps put a smile on your face.
Benefit #2: Dancing Relieves Stress
Many of our students say that dancing is a great stress reliever.
When they start dancing, all their work day worries just fade away.
They are now enjoying the music and the friendly interactions among
fellow students. This, combined with moving your body, helps the
body and the mind relax.
Benefit #3: Dancing Keeps You Fit
The Mayo Clinic recently published that dancing can burn as many
calories as walking or swimming or riding a bicycle. They said
that you can expect to burn 200 to 400 calories during a half-hour of
dancing.
Besides burning calories, dancing regularly can help improve your
cardiovascular health. It can help lower your heart rate, lower
blood pressure and improve your cholesterol profile. Dancing can
also help strengthen your weight-bearing bones.
And because dancing is social, you're more likely to keep it up.
There's more variety to keep you interested compared to the many other
solitary health-related activities promoted.
Benefit #4: Dancing Brings People Together
Many people start taking dance lessons at an Arthur Murray Studio to
prepare for a special event, a wedding, a
vacation or because they received a gift certificate. During the
course of their lessons, they meet new people, develop new relationships
and have such a good time that they decide to make dancing a regular
part of their lives.
For couples, dance lesson are a much needed time out from the stress
of everyday life; it provides time to focus only on each other.
Learn to dance is an opportunity to improve communication with your
partner, express yourself physically and creatively, while working
together toward a common goal.
Men and women who know how to dance are always in demand at parties,
galas and benefits. The return to partner dancing can be seen on
dance floors at night clubs and ballrooms across the world. People
are getting to know each other, moving together, step by step.
Learning to dance helps put romance and fun into your life.
It's more than roses and chocolates... You meet interesting,
friendly people at the studio or the clubs who you then go out with, go
places, do things and enjoy what dancing brings. Dancing has
become a part of our social life.
More and More People Are Ballroom Dancing
Ballroom dancing is not what it used to be. People around the
world have fallen in love with dancing because it is a great
recreational activity that's fun, romantic, very social and even good
for their health!
Today, young singles and couples are dancing for fun socially and
competitively. Ballroom dance clubs or teams are now very popular
in colleges. Intercollegiate ballroom dance (dancesport)
competitions are run all over the country. Harvard, Tufts, MIT and
Northeastern all have very good dance teams.
Mid-life adults look for an aerobic, creative and competitive
activity that's injury free. Thirty-somethings enjoy a night out
from the demands of work and family. Baby boomers, a generation
who never caught "Swing Fever" and swore on stacks of Grateful Dead
records that they'd never learn to ballroom dance, now find themselves
part of a very visible return to partner dancing.
People of all ages are having a great time discovering Foxtrot, Tango
or Salsa at holiday parties and galas. Many young executives are
attending formal galas, fundraisers and black tie dinners. They
are as well prepared to impress and succeed on the dance floor as they
are in the boardroom. They look confident. They look like
they know what they're doing and feel comfortable on the dance floor.
